3 guesses on what I’m asking Santa this year. Wait, make that one guess. You all should know by now. It’s time to upgrade my 5 year old digital camera.
And the camera I’m asking Santa for is the Canon 7D. Oh, doesn’t it look fabulous? It will be such a step up for me. Perhaps I won’t have to run the Dfine noise reducer on every single picture any more. . . .
So here is the deal. I need help with my wishlist. This is such an important decision for me and I want all the advice I can get.
Click on the image above to check out what I’m asking Santa for. For the moment, I think I can live with the 7D body, the 18-135 and the 50 mm 1.4. What do you think? Are those good lens selections until I can save up for a 70-300 and the 85mm 1.8? And I do want that Speedlite one of these days too.

As a pro photographer (and mom!) I’d say that speedlight should be near the top of your list. Maybe not the 580ex (though it’s the best!), but at least the 420. I find myself in lots of situations where a little fill light makes a big difference, and the speedlight is just perfect for that. I’m still shooting on my Canon Rebel XT, even for pro jobs, but I’ve found that the more expensive lenses are what make the biggest difference. So save your $$ and buy the best you can afford. I mean… the best Santa can afford.
My wish list is headed your way!!
I don’t have any wishlists at the moment…I deleted them all awhile ago because they were totally out of date. But I like yours!
And your priorities look good to me, but I don’t know enough about the lenses to be a good guide. That’s why I hang out here! (Just have a point and shoot in these parts. Dreaming of a DSLR after a few of the bills are paid off!)

I think you’re list is pretty awesome. Don’t know what I would add to it at this point.

Honestly, I think you have a great and perfect list already! The only other thing I have in my bag that you don’t is the Hoya Close Up Kit. It is three lens that are put on like filters. They do amazing Macro Lens work for only about $50.00. I love it since I don’t need that close up work often, so why have an expensive and yet heavy lens added to my bag.

My wishlist looks very similar but I did just pick up the 50mm1.4 lens and absolutely love it! After taking a little on-line photography course with John Gringo (of Art Wolfe fame) I am also adding a couple of extension tubes and a teleconverter…either the 1.4x or 2x. Oh and a graduated neutral density filter – he recommended having both the 2 stop and 3 stop, Tiffen brand.
My wish list is on the way
The 70-300 is a good lens, but aiming for the 70-200mm f2.8 USM IS L would be better, if you need more length you can always add the 1.4x to it. And the 50mm 1.4 is on my list as well!
Im asking santa for the same thing!!!!!!…Canon 7D….im in camera love with it. i want a 70-300 lens, if santa really really loves me a 50mm 1.2 L ( in my dreams)I also want one of those custom stylish camera straps and matching lens pouches from ETSY.com you can get them in any fabric you choose
…….
Just got the 50mm 1.4, and LOVE it!!!!
You will love it too!
I agree with April about the Hoya close up lens set. I bought it this summer and it’s an affordable way to take the occasional macro shot. Also, do you have a wide angle lens yet? It’s expensive, but maybe the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens would be a good addition.
I shared my photography wish list.

I just emailed you my Amazon wishlist. If you have any suggestions for studio lighting, I’d love to hear them!
Can I just copy and paste your wishlist? I have a Rebel Xti, and MAN, do I know what you are talking about with the Noise!!! I’m eagerly awaiting any feedback you can give when you get this camera.
My ultimate wish list lens would be the 24-70mm/2.8 lens, but would it be wrong to have a lens that’s worth double your camera body? It’s on my dream list.
Maybe you could add Photoshop CS4? You are using Elements, right? CS4 might be fun to play around with as well. (we are dreaming, right???)
I love my circular polarizer filter–way cheap–it filters the light when you are outside to cut out the yellow light (sun) and blue/green tones (shade) to get truer color! My wishlist needs the canon 70-300mm lens!
Don’t know if it’s at Amazon, but I’m loving my Lightscoop. It’s a lovely $40 addition that bounces the flash from your on camera flash and gets rid of ALL the harsh shadows and makes light look really natural! It doesn’t work outside, as it needs something to bounce light off of, but it makes my indoor stuff wonderful! I’m so excited to have it for the ‘dark’ season, when most of our pictures are either at night or inside.
Hi Erin,
I love my Nikon D-40, but don’t get to take a lot of pics. I do want a 70-300mm lens. I’ve sent you my wish list.
I like your list…Ive always been told its not the camera as much as the lens. But I dont listen very well. I recently just upgraded from my Canon Rebel xti to Canon 50d and bought 2 lenses the Canon 70-200 L IS USM and the 50mm. Both are awesome but my heart belongs to the 70-200…so lovely!
Here is my list… https://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/ARKMWTE93OZC9?ie=UTF8&responseType=info&responseCode=ups
Some of the things that I already have is listed in my profile.

My 50mm just broke, so that’s number one on my wishlist! I haven’t taken that lens off in… I have no idea how long. So I think you’ll be fine with that in your “for now” collection!
I got the 50mm f/1.4 a few months ago & I am addicted! I still rely heavily on my Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, but the more I use my prime (85mm is on my wishlist too!), the more I love it! I’m such a sucker for shallow dof.
Your wish list is very similar to mine! I want that 7D! lol.
That is totally the camera I want to! I don’t know about the other lenses but I LOVE my 50mm 1.4!
My wish list is on it’s way to you! How bout a new camera bag? I would LOVE a new camera bag!!
Okay, I sent you my wishlist. It’s not photography related, but maybe it’ll help with some other ideas. Thanks for the opportunity to win a GC!
I love your wish list so much that I copied it to keep as a reference – I want all the same things you do!! I am still shooting w/ my old XT, have the 70-300 lens & love it because it makes the XT better, but my next lens is going to be the 50-1.4. Thanks for the inspiration!
I emailed you my wish list

I use Nikon equipment so don’t know much about Cannon. I also have a Nikkor wishlist, 300mm 2.8, I have the 70-200 (but at 4.0 or 4.5) and just bought a 50mm 1.4 Nikkor. You may want to add a polarizing filter to your list otherwise your list looks pretty complete.
Thanks for the chance to win an Amazon gift card. I would use it for a PSE book or Lightroom ….thanks again
By far one of the most fun lenses I own is the Sigma 10-22. I shoot with a Canon 50D and get so many cool images with this one. Here it is to add to your list… and check out the rave reviews. http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-10-20mm-4-5-6-Digital-Cameras/dp/B0007U00X0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257973540&sr=8-2
The other lens that is by far superior to other zoom lenses (especially if you ever shoot sports or even fast moving toddlers) is the 70-200 L 2.8, don’t go for the higher zoom because it adds even more weight making it unbearable… instead opt for the extender that retains your f2.8 and doesn’t degrade your shots. All that said, Santa will have to get out some extra cash because that baby is not cheap
Happy Holidays.
We own Nikon stuff, but we own an 18-135 mm lens similar to the one you’re asking for. I really like the lens, but it’s not particularly sharp or fast. I don’t know if the Canon counterpart would be different or not.
One item I have found to be very useful is a wireless remote shutter release.
A book that I really enjoyed was Understanding Exposure.

If I were you I would beg Santa for the 50mm 1.4!
I’m still making due with my Canon Rebel XT, and will be for a while
I would like Santa to bring me the 50mm though. I have a 70 – 300, but it is a Sigma. I wish I had held out and saved till I got the canon glass. I will from now on I think. Don’t get me wrong, the 70-300 has served me well on my Zoo jaunts, but it could be a little sharper and I definitely need a sunny day!

Oh that 7D would be a dream come true, but WAY out of Santa’s price range for me this year! I’m a novice photographer but think the 18-135 & 50mm should keep you pretty happy for awhile. The speedlite might be nice with the indoor holiday parties and such, but hey, with the 7D who needs a flash???

oh, the 50mm 1.4 would be fabulous!!
You can never go wrong with a Nifty Fifty and all photographers need a battery backup.

I would definitely spend the bulk amount on great lenses. But then again, when you know what you want…why not just be a good girl so Santa will get it for you.
well I entered my wish list. for you though I would say the 50mm that would be a must have
You need a bag on there. I added a shootsac to my list tonight. Now you have me wanting to add the 7D but I think my husband would keel over if he saw that on there.
I totally agree w/ you on the camera upgrade…I’m after one, myself:) Personally, I would go for the 85, BUT I already have the 50 1.8…so it’s hard for me to justify purchasing the 1.4:( Doesn’t mean I don’t still want it though, hehe!
At the very top of my Wish List is a Nikon d300. Yes, I know there are “bigger & better” in the Nikon family but I’m trying to stay reasonable and not break Santa’s bank…after you turn 12 you realize Santa has a budget too!

I don’t have a list started yet but yours looks great. I could just copy it because those are the same things that I would love!
I think you need to add a battery grip & a crumpler camera bag. I hope that helps. Here’s the link to the grip.
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-BG-E7-Battery-Digital-Camera/dp/B002P3LD88/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258035400&sr=8-1
I forgot…you and I both need a shootsac! I’ve been doing a lot of family photo sessions lately and I hate carrying my big camera bag around. Shootsacs are gorgeous and necessary ~ very justified on the list:)
Hm, I’d add the extra battery for sure. When I upgraded from my Rebel xT to the 40D (yeah, I’d love to upgrade to this one—-sigh) I missed my the extra battery and the battery grip too.
Oh I do hope Santa will give you what you wish for
That looks like a great list! I have the 50D and the 7D looks awesome. I think you should move your speedlite up though, especially since you’ll be getting the new canon that can sync with it!! I just got a speedlite and wish I could do that without spending more… I have the 18-200 mm lens and LOVE it. It is wonderful
I emailed you my wish list on amazon, it’s Stuff Deann Wants. Photog related stuff is on there, but I’ve added other things too.
i like your list! it could very well be mine, minus the camera body, since i just got a rebel T1i…so now i’m just coveting all the great lenses out there! the 50mm f1.4 is at the top of my list!
I JUST got a dSLR for my bday so I’m no pro and can’t offer much advice. However, I’ve read it’s the glass that really makes the difference! Good luck!

I just got a new camera… and I have to 50 mm 1.4 and LOVE it. So good for taking pictures of people!
Eric,
I think you are going to need a big camera bag to put all of those goodies in, from Santa.
)
charlotte
oh what a fun toy!!!!!
definitely add zoom and macro lens to the list!
Hmmm….our Christmas lists are going to be similar this year! I am hoping to purchase the D7 before Christmas because I don’t think I can stand the excitement of upgrading from my XSi.
The 50mm/1.4 is a must and I think you will also like the 85/1.8 too. I have both, but I admit, my 50 sits on my camera most! the 85 is good if you have plenty of space–like outside or in a big studio, and the clarity is unbelievable!
As far as the speedlight–I don’t have one so I am probably not a good person to ask since I prefer natural light. I would suggest getting the 7D and then deciding if you need the speedlight. The light range of this camera is supposed to be awesome.
I love the rest of your list and I may have to add a couple of those items to my list!

Get the 7d but save for the 50 mm 1.2
That is esactly MY plan (just dont tell my hubby how much it costs
