Why I Don’t Use Photoshop Elements’ Action Player

by Erin on February 14, 2010 · 20 comments

There has been lots of discussion in various forums lately about using PSE’s Action Player for installing and running actions.  Here’s why I don’t use it (much):

  • Every action that works in PSE will work by installing actions the long way that I detail on these installation pages.
  • Not every action that works in PSE will work by installing it in the action player.

And it’s a shame too.  It’s much easier to install actions into the action player.  You don’t have to mess with resetting the MediaDatabase.db3 file and thumbnails aren’t used either.  Also, you can actually use Action Groups like the big Photoshop does.  This means that you only have one downloaded file which contains many actions.  Pioneer Woman’s Set 1 and Set 2 are action groups, for example.

Why don’t actions work in PSE’s Action Player?

Well, you probably know already that Photoshop Elements has 3 “modes” of editing.

  1. Full Edit – full access to all PSE’s features
  2. Quick Edit – just contains a few sliders and is for those of us who want to get in and out of PSE quickly and with no brain power expended
  3. Guided Edit – where the Action Player lives.

The Guided Edit has shortcuts to functions that are commonly used in photo editing – crop, lighten or darken, correct skin tone, etc.  It also has “Guided Activities” where you can, for instance, “Touch Up Scratches or Blemishes” with PSE’s guidance.  A quick look at the menus in the Guided Edit View will show you that many of the menu items available in the Full Edit are grayed out and not accessible.  And the interface is slightly different as well – the toolbox isn’t available, and for that reason the tool options at the top of the work area aren’t available either.

So, if there is anything that PSE can’t do in the Guided Edit mode, then the action won’t work in the action player.  And the results can be bad if you try.  For instance, some actions run through a Free Transform, Crop or Place step.  You know how you can’t do anything until you press the green check box once you’ve started one of these activities?  And you just get that annoying beep from PSE until you figure out what you’re doing?

Well, that green checkbox doesn’t appear anywhere in the Guided Edit.  And I mean you can’t do ANYTHING without pressing that green check box.  You can’t even press Enter to activate it.  So running one of those actions will trap you right in the middle of PSE.  The only way I’ve been able to extricate myself from that situation is to press Control+Alt+Delete and force the program to end.

Two more points about using the action player:

  • It’s only available in PSE 7 and 8
  • If you want to make any adjustments to the action you’ve just running (turn layers on or off, adjust layer opacity, use masks, etc.) you have to go over to the Full Edit mode anyway

However, having said all that, when it works, it works like a dream! It would save many people lots of time and confusion if we could use the action player more.  So, every action I run from now on in Photoshop Elements is going to be tested there and I’ll report back to you.  And maybe start a list of which actions can be used that way and which can’t?

Yet again you’ve taught me how very little I know about Photoshop Elements! I have never used any mode except for the Full edit and didn’t even know the Action Player existed. I guess ignorance is bliss and I won’t even try the other alternative for actions…but you’ve inspired me to check out some of the other features in the other categories.

Great article. Wonder if Adobe even realizes the shortcomings of the actions player?

Thank you! I wish I knew how to get in touch with the person at Adobe who could change this.

I LOATHE the action player! I run all my actions in the full editing mode of elements …. except my actions from Florabella. The instructions were to install them and use them in the action player. I *HATE* that! It really makes using them a big pain the rear! Are you saying that I can install them the regular way that install every other action that I have? I guess I haven’t attempted it, but I think that I will! Thanks for this! :)

Hi Heather!

I’m curious – why do you loathe the action player?

You should definitely be able to load your Florabella actions via the Effects Panel. But please let me know if it doesn’t work for some reason.

Thanks for the info on the action player. I have been using all of my actions through the player and did not realize that loading them the “old way” was even an option in PSE 8. So far I have not had any problems getting my actions to run using the player. I have many CoffeeShop Actions and so far all have worked through the action player. I will definitely let you know when I find an action that does not work with the action player so you can add it to the list you are keeping. Thanks for all that you do here on your blog I have learned so much.

Debi,

That is great information! I really do need to go back through my inventory of actions and figure out why some work and some don’t.

Thank you,
Erin

Erin – I hate using the action player because I have to switch to guided edit and then back to full edit to edit the layers or flatten or anything like that. I have no control through the guided edit other than running the action itself. I hate switching back and forth between full and guided. It’s just a pain, and it maximizes all images when you switch over to guided, which I don’t like either because that’s not how I work in elements. It adds so many unnecessary steps to my workflow, to the point that I avoid those actions unless I see that no other ones will give me the effect that I want. So far the only actions I run that was are the Florabella ones. I’m so thankful to know that I don’t have to. Off to switch it around :)

Heather, I totally hear ya. That is exactly why I wrote off the action player from the get-go. If only installing actions were as easy the old fashioned way as it is in the action player. Whatever time you save on the front-end by using it, you easily lose on the back.

Thank you Erin! I just installed the actions into my effects palette and they work like a charm … so much easier/simpler to run them from the effects palette than from the action player! :)

I had only read the instructions for PSE7-8, which said to use the action player. Thanks again for letting me know I could do it the “old” (PSE 6) way :)

Speaking of PW’s actions…Any idea when she’s going to release the PSE versions? Just curious…

I wish I knew. I sent her an email not too long ago asking her about them!

Thanks for the info! It sounds like this may solve my problem. I had loaded some actions from CoffeeShop and another site. They showed up in the action player but wouldn’t show up in the Effects folder. Only an action from PhotoBlast showed up in both. I can’t check until I get home tonight, but hopefully this will solve my problem. Thanks so much!

Hi Twyla,

I hope it helps! There is a different path to use to make action show up in the effects palette. Check out the links here for instructions specific to your operating system and version of PSE. http://www.texaschicksblogsandpics.com/photography-page/installing-actions-in-photoshop-elements/

Hi-

I have the Photoshop Elements 7.0 version and for some reason it won’t let me access the “guided edit mode” or any of the effects under “full edit”. I was wondering if you have any idea why this is. It’s very frustrating and odd because it did work when I first installed the program. But all of a sudden i can’t get into it. So if you have any ideas why this is, I would appreciate your help.

Lacy,

Try opening the program from the Start Menu/All Programs. If that doesn’t help, can you think of anything you did to trigger the change? Install new actions or a plugin maybe?
