Sharpening Using Photoshop Elements' Unsharp Mask

by Erin on December 6, 2008

The Unsharp Mask is located in the Enhance Menu in recent versions of PSE and the Filters Menu in older versions.  First, a few definitions:

Amount refers to how much sharpening is applied.

Radius identifies how many pixels around an edge will be sharpened.

Threshold defines how different one pixel must be from the those around it to constitute an edge (the smaller the number the sharper on this one.)

Here are some settings recommended in the Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers (I love this book).  Experiment with the settings, because they will likely vary from picture to picture.

  • Amount 150%, Radius 1, Threshold 10
  • Amount 75%, Radius 2, Threshold 3
  • Amount 85%, Radius 1, Threshold 4
