Sharpen in Photoshop Elements Using the High Pass Filter

by Erin on December 6, 2008

I like this method of sharpening a lot, especially when used with a layer mask.  It works great on water and for brightening eyes.

  • Duplicate the layer you’d like to sharpen (you might need to flatten your image first)
  • Go to the Filter Menu and select Filter/Other/High Pass
  • Set Radius anywhere from 2 – 20 pixels.  I usually get good results with a number towards 20.  However, Photoshop Elements 7, the Missing Manual recommends a lower number determined by moving the slider until you can barely see the outline of your subject and no or very little color is visible.

  • Hit OK, and change the Blending Mode of this layer to Overlay or Soft Light.  Adjust the layer’s opacity if needed.

Free sources of layer masks are listed in the Free Actions section of my Best Resources page.
