Lightroom Tutorial: Use Import Presets to Save Time and Apply Edits Automatically

EDIT:  Today, February 29 only, Lightroom 3 is on sale at Amazon for $89.  On March 2, Lightroom 3 is on sale at Amazon for $129. I suspect that vendors are trying to turn over their LR3 stock before Lightroom 4 is released.  This is a great way to get started in LR if you’re not there already!  $129 is still a discount, so you haven’t missed out completely.

When processing photos in Lightroom, I’ve written tutorials lately about 2 edits that I make to each and every photo:

Did you know that you can set up defaults in Lightroom so that these edits are applied automatically, without you have to do a thing?

There are actually two ways to go about it. I’ve chosen the method I describe below because it’s a bit easier to turn it off if, for some reason, I don’t want to apply those two edits.

First off, apply the settings that you would like applied to the photos that you import.  The screen shot below is from my Lightroom Develop Panel.  The only two edits I’ve made are to Enable the Profile Corrections and to  Camera Calibration.

Note that turning on the Lens Profile Correction will tell Lightroom to assign the relevant profile for each photo that you import.  LR will read the lens and assign this profile per photo.

Next, go to the Presets Panel on the left side of the Develop Module and click the plus sign in the top right corner to add a preset.

For this preset, I only want to program in the Lens Corrections and Camera Calibration, so those are the only two items that should have check marks.  Name the preset whatever you’d like, and it’s fine for it to default to the User Presets folder.

Next time you import photos, look for the Apply During Import section on the right side of the Import Module.  Select your new preset from the Develop Settings drop down menu.

All the photos you import with this preset selected will have lens distortion corrections and camera calibration applied.
And, if you don’t want to use these edits, just turn the Develop Settings to None for that particular edit.  You can also undo these presets in the Develop Module.

To know of these things are such a blessing. I will be happy to try to implement them and hope it works for me. Thanks for sharing your wonderful skills and tips! :)
