This tutorial produces an effect which varies from picture to picture. In some shots that I took late in the day, the darker skies made it look just a bit closer to sunset. It other shots, the darker skies looked as if I had taken them with a polarizing filter. I like this one with the Blue Skies method to simulate a sunrise.
- Select the area of the sky you want to darken.
- Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer by clicking on the half black/half white circle near the top of the layers palette.
- Double click on the Adjustment Layer Icon (it has two cogs on it and is the first box in your new layer). In the resulting Hue/Saturation dialogue box, change the drop down list next to the word Edit from Master to Blues.
- Change Hue to -5, either by typing or using the slider. Change Saturation to +16 and Lightness to +18.
- At the bottom of this Hue/Saturation dialogue box, there are two colored lines with two sliders between them (see the image above). Grab the left side of the left slider and drag it until the first number in the line of numbers above these colors reads 189 degrees.
- Grab the right side of the same slider and drag it until the second number in the line above reads 193 degrees.
- Click ok and change the Blending Mode of this layer to Multiply. Adjust opacity to taste.
