Create a Nighttime Effect in Photoshop Elements

by Erin on November 25, 2008

This effect emphasizes one element of your image by darkening the other elements.  The result appears as if all but the emphasized element were taken in lower light.  This tutorial is based on the Photoshop Elements 7 Smart Brush Reverse Night effect – I’ve adapted it so that anyone can use it, regardless of whether they have PSE 7 or not!

Create a Nighttime Effect in Photoshop Elements

  • Select the area of your image you want to emphasize with the selection tool of your choice.
  • Invert your selection by going to the Select Menu and clicking on Inverse, or hit Shift+Control+I.
  • Make sure your colors are set to Default by typing D.  If black isn’t the foreground color, type X.
  • Add a Solid Color Adjustment Layer by clicking on the half-black half-white circle near the top of the Layers Palette.  This step adds a black wash to your selection.
  • Click OK, and reduce the opacity of the layer to about 50%, or until you find the desired effect.
