This photo…
wasn’t born this way.
It was born looking like this.
And while I’ve rambled before about my cropping obsession, I’ve been finding recently that sometimes it doesn’t take a major crop to make a major impact.
Sometimes angling a photo just a tad to the left..or maybe the right…is all it takes to get some attention.
Here’s a few examples from my afternoon at the trainyard ~
This shot is pretty good on it’s own, obviously I was trying to use that doorway as a a natural frame…
…but I think by angling it just a tad to the right gives it a lot more impact and more of a WOW factor!
Here’s a shot that is really cool and I edited it a few different ways….
…but for the close-up I angled it to the left and just gave a glimpse of my model…I think it suits the look better than a straight-on portrait would have.
This shot is a very subtle angle to the right but it makes all the difference…here’s the original…
…the gas hose wasn’t exactly what I was wanting to highlight! I cropped in close and angled to the right to show off this little beauty…
For the last one, although my models are gorgeous, the composition is not so great and nothing really jumps out to get your attention…
…so I cropped in close and angled it dramatically to the left…now it’s become one of my favorites!
By the way, I used Erin’s Drop Shadow action for all these photos and MCP Actions “Size It” from the Finish It collection to size smaller for the web. Aren’t they great?!?!
I hope my little ‘show & tell’ today on angles gives you inspiration for your own photos.
What’s so fabulous about photography is there’s no right or wrong with creating in your own style….just infinite possibilities!

Love these shots! These are truly WOW photographs.
those images are amazing! love what you’ve done w/ them!
I love this! I don’t think I have ever thought about angleing/angling (neither looks spelled correctly) pictures so dramatically…but I love what you have done.
Wow! I always love to see before/after images and these are so impressive. I love how you use angles AND textures to get such dramatic and artistic results. Keep up the great tips and tutorials, I am learning so much!

wow what a difference the cropping can make you have inspired me to get a little “cropping creative ” today thank you
Wow! You have showed me how to look deeper into every photo for that special angle and possible crop! Beautiful! Simply stunning! I am inspired and will remember this post in my future attempts to edit! Thank you for sharing!
Did you use an action for the “tad to the left” or right? I love this effect and would like to purchase the action, if that is what is used. Thanks.
Actions were used on the photos themselves to achieve the various “looks” that you see, but the before & after crops were just manual crops using the Crop Tool in Photoshop Elements. I use actions from this site and also Coffeeshop. Not quite sure if that’s what you were asking so comment again if you need more info~ Thanks!

Gorgeous before and after but I think that the after crops do add more drama and also the processing. Can you share some hints and tips on how you processed them and what and if any textures where used, etc? Please and ty.
Thanks for the compliments! I use actions & textures quite a bit in my processing and I’m a huge fan of all the FREE stuff! Coffeeshop actions were used on several photos and Kaleidoscope textures were also used. There’s no specific “recipe” for how I use either, I add both and then tweak until I like the look. Try them yourself and have fun playing!!
